In the Middle of the Battle

"Like a soldier with no army in the middle of the battle. I was broken, I was broken." These are the first lines of Mercy Me's song "Then Christ Came." I've written these words before, but they have a new meaning today.

My husband took me to the local ER after my throat began closing on me for no apparent reason. Like a soldier, wounded, I walked into the ER, walked past security, barely able to speak, and beginning to have difficulty breathing. The security guard stopped me, quickly checked me in, and then went to tell the medical staff that I needed help now.

The next day, after being told repeatedly, I finally realized I was in a downtown intensive care unit. I had to be trached to breathe. The local ER couldn't handle my situation and had to transport me via ambulance to the main downtown hospital. On day four, the hospital moved me to a step-down unit. Still unable to get out of bed, speak, or eat.

The ICU nurse told me how proud she was of my progress. She told me I was her hero. I know. She tells many patients the same thing. I'm not saying she was lying to me. She was doing what she had been called to do. Love others.

I am improving because I know the Great Physician, God Almighty, and I'm in His hands. But God placed all these angels around me to take care of me, all the Angels in scrubs who walk the halls of the two hospitals where I have been cared for.

These angels, some doctors, nurses, technicians, therapists, and all the others behind the scenes live by the same creed, "Love one another as Christ has loved you." John 13:34. They don't work 8-5 jobs with an hour for lunch. They work long hours, grabbing a bite, sometimes between checking patients or filling out paperwork. They don't look at patients and decide to help or care for them. They don't see skin color, nationality, language, ability, or disability. They look at a person and love them. They are the "Good Samaritan" (Luke 10) who sees someone in need of help they can provide, and they do what is needed.

When the Father calls them a good and faithful servant for seeing Him naked and clothing Him or hungry and feeding Him, they won't ask, "When?" They do it daily "to all the least of these." Mathew 25:40. I was blessed to be one of the "least" this week.

I am still in the middle of the battle, but I am in God's hands, and He is in control. I am blessed to have such wonderful angles looking over me.

I am also blessed to have so many angels that I can call Brother, Sister, Daughter, Son, Grandchild, niece, or nephew. We may not be related by DNA but by Christ's adoptive blood.

Please like if you are one of my "Angels".
