Sun's Light and the Water of Life

“The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact expression of His nature, sustaining all things by His powerful word.” Hebrews 1:3

As an elementary teacher, I always enjoyed teaching our science lessons. One lesson I especially remember, and loved, was planting seedlings in the spring. One experiment we would do would require us to have multiple plants and provide them with different amounts of the necessities of life. One group of plants would be placed in front of the window. They would receive the perfect amount of light and water every day. Another group would receive less light and water. The last group would be placed in a dark closet and receive little light or water. There would be other groups that received differing amounts of light and water. We would collect the data and compare it in a chart. The plants that received the correct light and the proper amount of water always thrived, while the plants receiving little to no light or water would shrivel up and die.

I was reminded of this lesson when I read this verse. We are just like these plants. When fully immersed in God’s Light and receiving the Living Waters of His Word, we will thrive. Does this mean that we won’t have trouble? No. To paraphrase Lynn Anderson’s song, God didn’t promise us a rose garden. But God will protect us. And on the inverse, if we aren’t in God's will, receiving His light and word, we will wither away in the dark of sin.

I wrote this in an earlier post, “Light is the absence of dark, and dark is the absence of light.” It can also be written that light is the presence of God and dark is the absence of God. Sin and evil lurk in the dark. John 8:12 says, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness but have the light of life.” With God, we can live in His light and thrive.

So, plant yourself firmly in God’s Word and Light, and enjoy the blessings He bestows.
